Exploring the intersection of theatre and mental health<\/h3>\n

across Europe<\/h3>\n

Join First Fortnight and our European partners for a day of\u00a0conversation, performance and exchange exploring what theatre can do for mental health.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The THEATRUM ANIMI European Symposium brings together artists, mental health practitioners, cultural organisations, policymakers, researchers and people with lived experience to share ideas, practice and perspectives from across Europe.<\/p>\n

Through live performance, conversation and audience participation, we\u2019ll explore how theatre can create spaces to talk about mental health, build connection, challenge stigma and support greater social inclusion.<\/p>\n

The symposium is hosted by First Fortnight as part of the\u00a0THEATRUM ANIMI Dublin Study Visit, 21\u201323 October 2026<\/strong><\/a>, and will also mark the launch of THEATRUM ANIMI\u2019s shared European public campaign.<\/p>\n

Guests arrive at Smock Alley Theatre for registration, tea and coffee, with an opportunity to meet fellow attendees and THEATRUM ANIMI partners from across Europe ahead of the day\u2019s programme.<\/p>\n

10:00 \u2014 Welcome & Opening<\/h3>\n

A welcome from First Fortnight introducing THEATRUM ANIMI, the European partnership and the purpose of the Dublin Symposium.<\/p>\n

The opening will set the context for a day exploring the relationship between\u00a0theatre and mental health<\/strong>, bringing together artists, cultural organisations, practitioners, policymakers and people with lived experience.<\/p>\n

10:15 \u2014 Ministerial Address & Conversation<\/h3>\n

An address and conversation considering the role that\u00a0arts, culture and creative participation can play in conversations around mental health<\/strong>, and the importance of collaboration across the cultural, community and health sectors.<\/p>\n

11:00 \u2014 Creative Interlude<\/h3>\n

A creative moment within the morning programme, bringing artistic expression into the Symposium and reflecting the day\u2019s commitment to placing\u00a0creative experience alongside discussion and exchange<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

11:15 \u2014 Break<\/h3>\n

Tea and coffee, with time for informal conversation and connection.<\/p>\n

11:30 \u2014 Across Europe: Theatre, Mental Health & Community<\/h3>\n

A conversation with members of the THEATRUM ANIMI partnership exploring approaches to theatre, participation and mental health across different European contexts.<\/p>\n

Partners will share perspectives from their own work, considering what can be learned across borders and how theatre can create opportunities for\u00a0encounter, recognition, participation and connection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

12:15 \u2014 In Conversation with PJ Gallagher<\/h3>\n

A conversation exploring\u00a0creativity, performance, mental health and lived experience<\/strong>, considering how personal stories and creative expression can contribute to wider conversations around mental health.<\/p>\n

13:00 \u2014 Lunch + Partner Exchange<\/h3>\n

Lunch and an opportunity for informal conversation between attendees, artists, practitioners, organisations and THEATRUM ANIMI partners.<\/p>\n

The exchange creates space to make connections, share experiences and explore ideas and potential relationships beyond the Symposium itself.<\/p>\n

14:30 \u2014 Creative Interlude<\/h3>\n

A creative interlude bringing the focus back to artistic experience following lunch.<\/p>\n

This moment creates space to pause, experience and reflect \u2014 moving the programme from discussing what theatre and creativity can make possible to\u00a0encountering creative practice as part of the day itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

14:45 \u2014 The Big Conversation<\/h3>\n

A facilitated conversation bringing together perspectives and ideas from across the day.<\/p>\n

Artists, partners, practitioners and attendees will be invited to consider some of the questions emerging from the Symposium:<\/p>\n

Where can it create connection?<\/strong><\/p>\n

How can artistic practice contribute to changing the way we encounter and talk about mental health?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The conversation will create space for exchange between different perspectives and consider what might be carried forward from the day.<\/p>\n

15:05 \u2014 THEATRUM ANIMI Campaign Launch<\/h3>\n

The official launch of the European\u00a0THEATRUM ANIMI awareness-raising campaign .<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Dublin Symposium marks the beginning of the campaign’s activation across the THEATRUM ANIMI partnership, with organisations across Europe beginning to share and adapt campaign content through their own channels and communities.<\/p>\n

15:35 \u2014 Creative Interlude<\/h3>\n

A final creative moment within the Symposium programme, creating space for reflection as the day draws towards its close.<\/p>\n
